In August 1983, following an NCBLG and NGLTF-led campaign, Mrs. Coretta Scott King announces support for national civil rights legislation protecting the rights of gays and lesbians.

Timeline: 1983

Please Post Your Comments and Recollections About 1983. Be as detailed as possible, including dates and locations and individuals involved. With the help of the site administrator you can include links to documents that are to be uploaded to the Archives. These documents can also be photos and video clips. Some highlights of 1983 included: DC Chapter members engaged in a sit-in in Congressman Fauntroy's Congressional Offices and are arrested by US Capitol Police; Gil Gerald & Ginny Apuzzo (NGTLF) engage in mid-night negotiations with the Coalition of Conscience led by Mrs. Coretta Scott King, leading to an agreement for Audre Lorde to be included in the program for the 20th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs Peace and Freedom; Mrs. King announces her endorsement of the Federal Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights Bill; and NCBLG and other LGBT delegations participate in the 20th Anniversary March.
